How to Eat Your Feelings (the Healthier Way)

You might associate the phrase "eating your feelings" with a pint of ice cream indulged in self-pity, or an extra slice of pizza meant to alleviate stress that instead exacerbates negative emotions. Nourishing Your Whole Self: A Cookbook with Feelings is a concept cookbook in which Marci categorizes recipes by how they make you feel: refreshed, peaceful, comforted, treated, or indulged. The idea behind this is to remind readers to be more aware of how food makes them feel. Marci believes that as we get better at listening to our bodies, we naturally make healthier choices overall. Rather than a cookbook of only healthy foods, it's a book in which there are recipes on both ends of the indulgence spectrum. As a yoga instructor and meditation coach, Marci believes that awareness of how your body is feeling and what you need are the first steps to a healthy relationship with food. Here are a few of her tips and tricks:
1) Eat what you love! Pizza and desserts can be part of a balanced diet. Listen to what your body wants—it likely doesn't want to eat only pizza for every meal, but it doesn't want to only ingest green smoothies either.
2) Keep basic staples on hand. Bananas, avocados, nuts, and raw snacking vegetables like carrots and green beans are a few of Marci's nutritious and satisfying go-tos.
3) Start your day with warm water with lemon. It's a cleansing and hydrating way to get your system going.
4) When you're entertaining a group with multiple dietary considerations (gluten-free, vegan, paleo), start with vegetables! Beautiful salads, roasted vegetables like broccoli, and mashed or pureed vegetables like cauliflower are all great ideas.
5) It can be hard to get the motivation to cook just for yourself. Even a simple meal like scrambled eggs with vegetables can be satisfying! Easy and hearty soup recipes are also good solutions to make in bulk and eat throughout the week.
